Orillas, resistencia y alianzas. La “otra banda” del Paraná en los siglos XVII-XVIII en el nordeste del Río de la Plata

Abstract

La orilla, implica desde nuestra mirada, una delimitación, separación y distancias, pero también ejes de aproximación y conflicto. Es lo que observamos en una sociedad que se construye lentamente a partir de la fundación de una ciudad a mediados del siglo XVI: San Juan de Vera de las Siete Corrientes, fundada en abril de 1588 y la “otra banda” del río Paraná, cuyas costas rodean el nuevo emplazamiento. Enfrente, en la otra orilla están las etnias chaqueñas, que resisten, avanzan, luchan por mantener sus espacios. En este texto nos referiremos a esas orillas, el majestuoso Paraná y los vínculos entre dos sociedades que durante tres siglos se relacionan, se enfrentan y cada una intenta defender un espacio. Una historia de desencuentros y temores, pero también de identidad, de defensa del Chacú y de la tierra propia frente al invasor. Observaremos dos momentos temporales: el conflictivo siglo XVII de enfrentamientos permanentes y el siglo XVIII en el que se ensayan modelos de alianzas con la configuración de reducciones con los abipones y mocobíes, siempre con la percepción de los ríos por parte de las etnias de la región y de la sociedad colonial.

The shore, implies from our gaze, a delimitation, separation and distances, but also axes of approach and conflict. This is what we observe in a society that was slowly built from the founding of a city in the mid-16th century: San Juan de Vera de las Siete Corrientes, founded in April 1588, and the “other band” of the Paraná River, whose coastlines surround the new site. Opposite, on the other shore are the Chaco ethnic groups, who resist, advance, fight to maintain their spaces. In this text we will refer to those shores, the majestic Paraná and the links between two societies that for three centuries have been linked, confronted and each one tries to defend a space. A story of disagreements and fears, but also of identity, of the defense of the Chacú and of their own land against the invader. We will observe two temporary moments: the conflictive 17th century of permanent confrontations and the 18th century in which models of alliances with the configuration of reductions with the Abipones and Mocobíes are tested, always with the perception of the rivers by the ethnic groups of the region. and colonial society.
