The literary zone of Chaco : region, rural space and hostile landscapes
In this article we propose to trace a journey through the works of
Argentine literature that refer to the region of Chaco in order to analyze the
hostile landscapes that are presented and that characterize the relationship
between literature, space and region. The hypothesis is that in the literary
zone of the Chaco, the link between literature, region and space in some
individual poetics such as that of some stories by Horacio Quiroga, in Bajo este sol tremendo (2009) by Carlos Busqued, El viento que arrasa (2012)
by Selva Almada and Una casa junto al tragadero (2017) by Mariano Quirós
create a particular landscape characterized by hostility; therefore, a series of
elements such as unbearable heat, weather, violence, mud and human-animal
nexus are present in these narratives. We will consider the notion of region
(Kaliman 1994; Silvestri, 2017) and “zone” and “impenetrable literature”
(Caminada, 2021) and its relation with the landscape (Silvestri 2002; 2017;
Simmel, 2001) and the space (Rodríguez, 2012) to analyze the articulation
between space and region in the literary zone of Argentine Chaco.
