Resumen
Los terpenos son compuestos volátiles que forman parte del aceite esencial de la planta Senecio grisebachii. Algunos terpenos son utilizados en distintas industrias (alimentos, cosméticos, artículos de limpieza). En este trabajo se estudiaron los efectos que causan los terpenos sobre el hígado de ratones. El extracto acuoso de flores frescas de Senecio grisebachii, que contiene terpenos, fue obtenido por destilación por arrastre con vapor de agua y administrado vía oral a ratones macho (n=10) de 20±2 g de peso a razón de 0,5 ml/ratón/día durante 30 días. Al final los animales fueron anestesiados con éter y sacrificados para obtener muestras de hígado, las que fueron procesadas por las técnicas histológicas clásicas para bloques parafinados, cortadas en 5µm y coloreadas con hematoxilina–eosina. Igual número de animales controles recibieron solo agua. A partir de los 10 días de iniciada la experiencia se presentó disminución en la consistencia de la materia fecal, pelo hirsuto, decaimiento, deshidratación y, hacia los 30 días, letargia y desplazamiento lento y ambaleante. El examen histopatológico mostró degeneración turbia e hidrópica y necrosis de los hepatocitos situados alrededor de la vena central y espacios porta, así como congestión y desorganización trabecular. Los resultados demuestran que los terpenos contenidos en Senecio grisebachii son hepatóxicos.
Terpenes are volatile components found in Senecio grisebachii, being constituents of the essential oil. Some of them are used in food, cosmetic and cleaning industries. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of these components on mice liver. An aqueous extract from fresh flowers of Senecio grisebachii, which contains terpenes, was administered to mice (n=10), 0.5 ml/mouse/day per os during 30 days. Controls only received water. Ten days after the beginning of the assay, animals had soft stools, hirsute hair, dehydration, and after 30 days they were lethargic and had slow and wobbling movements. Mice were anestethized with ether and then euthanized to obtain tissue samples from the liver. For microscopical examination, tissue was processed routinely and embedded in paraffin, and 5 µm sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Histopathological findings showed ballooning and hydropic degenerations, and centrilobar and periportal necrosis as well as congestion and disorganization of the parenchyma structure. Results indicate that terpenes from Senecio grisebachii are toxic for the liver.
