The main landscape patterns in the Higher Paraná River Between Candelaria and Ituzaingó
cities, were studied. The data for wind frequency, velocity and fetch, together with depth
were used to calcúlate shallow and sheltered areas in which free floating plants could find
favourable conditions to initial colonization. Physical and Chemical features recorded at
eight stations during the early filling phase are discussed in relation to potential plant
development. The principal objective was to estímate potential areas o f the dam that the
anchored plants could colonize. The observed máximum depth o f colonization of
macrophytes presents in the area before the impoundment and the hypsographic curves
were used in this procedure. The areas potentially colonized by ffee-floating vegetation it
was carried out starting ffom the morphometry o f the reservoir and the predominant winds.
Landscape units were identified using Landsat TM satellite images and fíeld knowledge of
vegetation. The classification process done with IDRISI software allowed to identify the
landscape units, following the method o f the Ecological Land Classification. A Landscape
Units Map and relative valúes o f patches composing the system were obtained and related
them with hydrological variability using the software PULSO at the hydrometers of
Posadas (Misiones) and Ituzaingó (Corrientes) for historical series. The landscape units
and the more conspicuous populations o f plants, were related with hydrological variability
and other key factors for to estímate the actual and potential distribution and abundance of
aquatic and palustrine plants in the in the íuture two decades o f the reservoir. The potential
colonization by anchored plants (PCAP) and the potential areas for initial colonization of
ffee-floating plants were estimated during the early filling phase for the Yaciretá reservoir.
In order to obtain the PCAP, the observed máximum depth o f colonization o f the anchored
macrophytes before impoundment and the hypsographic curves were used. The species
inhabiting the pre-impoundment area were classified according to the different bioforms
before the inclusión in the analysis. The areal extent o f PCAP (ffom depths between 0-4m)
could reach 275 km2 at 76 m above sea level (current water level), whereas at 82 m above
sea level (final filling level) the littoral zone will be increased by about 21.5%. The
potential area for geophytes was estimated to be 99 km2; 131 km2 for root-floating leaved
plants and 120 km2 for submerged plants, at 76 m above sea level. At 82 m above sea
level, the geophytes could reach 271 km2.
