In general, there is a consensus on the idea that preserving biodiversity the functions, and services that ecosystems provide for the benefit of nature and human beings are protected as well. The Chaco Biogeographic Province represents 58% of the territory of the Chaco Province, a region also known as the South American Gran Chaco. Historically, Gran Chaco was the most extensive territory with xerophytic forests in South America. However, deforestation, conversion of land for cultivation, and pasture for cattle have affected most of this region, mainly in Argentina. Grasslands have also been affected and their coverage has been reduced. In this context of deforestation and accelerated agricultural expansion, ecosystems have become vulnerable and not only the existence of many species is in danger, but also the ecosystem services they provide.
Spiders play an important role as predators of insects in terrestrial ecosystems due to their abundant presence and their distribution throughout almost the entire planet. In addition, these arthropods can serve as ecological and biodiversity indicators due to their sensitivity to physical parameters, habitat structure, and human disturbances. They are also useful as environmental indicators since they are sensitive to different types of toxic substances, such as pesticides or herbicides.
Spiders of the Salticidae family, also known as jumping spiders, are small to medium-sized spiders, characterized by having a diurnal habit associated with great visual capacity. They are stalking hunters and generally present a very marked sexual dimorphism. Members of this group can be found in a wide variety of habitats and microhabitats. The spiders of the Salticidae family are the family with the highest species richness in the world. The biogeographical province of Chaco was little explored in relation to the ecological and taxonomic study of the spiders of this family and the works that exist are recent.
In this sense, the objectives of this thesis were: 1) to characterize the structure of the Salticidae communities in forest and grassland habitats, with different protection conditions (protected or unprotected), natural or anthropized, in terms of abundance, the richness of species and diversity (alpha, beta, and gamma) for the studied area of the Humid Eastern Chaco; 2) identify species of Salticidae that are indicators of environmental quality in different conditions (conservation or environmental alteration); and 3) achieve a list of species and identify and describe potential new species. For this, two hypotheses were proposed: 1) the types of environments and conservation conditions have a differential impact on the diversity and structure of the Salticidae spider communities; and 2) the species Salticidae spiders are not distributed homogeneously in the different conservation conditions of the environments, showing degrees of affinity with some of them.
Within the Humid Eastern Chaco, sampling was carried out in the Chaco National Park, the Pampa del Indio Provincial Park, and two unprotected intermediate sites between these parks. The samplings were carried out systematically, covering three habitats: forest foliage, forest litter, and grassland. In forests and grasslands, three 200-m transects were traced, separated by a distance of no less than 2 km. In the grassland transects, a sample was taken every 50 m. In the forest transects, two samples were taken every 50 m, one of leaf litter and the other of foliage. The epigean forest spiders were obtained by means of leaf litter samples and subsequent passage through a sieve. In the forest foliage, the spiders were collected by beating the vegetation. In the pasture, samples were taken by vacuuming using a G-Vac, garden vacuum. Sampling was carried out for each climatic station. All samples were taken during the day when Salticidae spiders are most active.
The material was identified and classified up to the species level. For ecological analyses, juveniles were included, although analyses with adults were also presented separately. In addition, tourist species at the habitat level that cause overestimations in richness were detected and removed.
To evaluate the alpha diversity within each site, the Shannon diversity index and the inverse of the Simpson dominance index were used. To find out if there were significant differences between the values of richness, abundance, and alpha diversity between the communities of the four sites studied, the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test and the Dunn test were used. To assess equity, rank-abundance plots were made. In addition, with the values of the proportions of species resulting from this analysis, the species were classified as dominant, common, and rare. As part of the alpha diversity analyses, estimates of species richness were made for each site and habitat. Species accumulation curves were plotted with the values of observed and estimated richness. In addition, their slopes were calculated to evaluate if the curves reached an asymptote and, consequently, if the samplings were good.
To calculate the gamma diversity, the total richness in the study area, the Shannon index, and the inverse Simpson index were used. To calculate these indices, foliage, litter, and grassland samples were combined.
The beta diversity indices or the Jaccard and Bray-Curtis dissimilarity index were calculated between the Chaco National Park, the Pampa del Indio Provincial Park, the Intermediate I site, and the Intermediate II site. Both indices were calculated pairwise. In addition to the dissimilarity values, in order to better interpret the causes of beta diversity, the components of the Bray-Curtis indices (balanced changes in abundance and gradual changes in abundance) and Jaccard (replacement and differences in richness) were obtained. To find out if the Jaccard and Bray-Curtis dissimilarities between the communities of the four sites were significant, PERMANOVA analyses were performed. In addition, hierarchical cluster diagrams were made.
The correlation of geographic distance with the Jaccard, and Bray-Curtis indices and their components was evaluated. For this, Spearman's non-parametric correlation index was used. This was represented graphically using dispersal and correlation plots.
With the values of the dissimilarity indices and their components, significance tests were performed to assess which component of the indices best explains beta diversity. For these significance tests, the Kruskal-Wallis test and the student's t-test were used. This was graphically represented by boxplots. All beta diversity analyses were presented both overall and for each habitat.
The potential indicator or detector species of the conservation status of the habitats were analyzed using the IndVal index. To carry out this analysis, the data from the intermediate sites were grouped under the category of "semi-natural habitats" and the Chaco National and Provincial Parks of Pampa del Indio, under the category of "natural habitats". The analyzes were performed for each habitat (foliage, leaf litter, and grassland) independently. Species that showed an IndVal >0.70 were considered indicator species, and those that showed an IndVal >0.45 and <0.70 were considered detector species. On the other hand, the presence of unique species in protected and unprotected environments was analyzed. To represent this, Venn diagrams were made.
A total of 1697 spiders of the Salticidae family were collected and 68 species were identified. According to the Shannon index, the gamma diversity was 5.25, while according to the Simpson index, the gamma diversity was 0.99. The most abundant species was Maeota dorsalis Zhang & Maddison, 2012. The abundance was higher in the Intermediate II site and the richness was higher in the Chaco National Park.
Considering the adults, a total of 523 individuals in the adult stage were collected and 58 species were identified. According to the Shannon index, the gamma diversity was 5.05, while according to the Simpson index, the gamma diversity was 0.99. The most abundant species was "Euophrys" melanoleuca Mello-Leitão, 1944. The abundance and richness were higher in the Intermediate II site.
In foliage, there were significant differences in abundance, richness, and Shannon diversity among the four sites, but there were no significant differences in diversity with the Simpson index. The results of the Dunn test together with the lineplots allowed us to observe that the richness and diversity of Shannon at the Intermediate II site were significantly greater than at the Intermediate I site.
When considering adults in this habitat, abundance, richness, and diversity (both Shannon's and Simpson's and their order one and order two true diversity derivatives, respectively) showed significant differences between the four sites. Looking at the lineplots in conjunction with the Dunn test outcomes, the abundance at the Intermediate II site was significantly higher than in the Pampa del Indio Provincial Park, the richness at the Intermediate II site was significantly higher than at the other sites, the Shannon diversity at the Intermediate II site was significantly higher than in the Chaco National Park, and the value of the Simpson index at the Intermediate II site was significantly lower concerning the other sites.
In the foliage species ranking graphs, Philira micans was the dominant species in this habitat at intermediate sites and in Chaco National Park. In the Pampa del Indio Provincial Park, the dominant species was Maeota dichrura. A predominance of dominant and rare species was observed, except in the In II site where the percentage of intermediate species was higher than that of the dominant ones. Regarding adults, in the species ranking graphs, Philira micans was the dominant species in this habitat in the intermediate sites, Cotinusa vittata was the dominant species in Chaco National Park, and Arachnomura querandi in Pampa del Indio Provincial Park. The percentage of dominant, intermediate, and rare species was more equitable in the Intermediate II site, in Chaco National Park all the species were dominant, in the Intermediate I site there were no intermediate species and, in the Pampa del Indio, Provincial Park, there were no rare species. Only in the last site, a lower percentage of dominant species was observed in relation to the intermediate ones.
The dominant species in the leaf litter was Semiopyla viperina at all four sites. The species were dominant and intermediate and both had similar percentages, except in the Chaco National Park where there were no intermediate species. No rare species were recorded at any of the sites. Regarding adults, the dominant species was Semiopyla viperina in the parks, while in the Intermediate II site, the dominant species was Corythalia conferta and in the Intermediate I site three species dominated equally. The percentage of dominant species in relation to the intermediate and rare ones was 100% in all the sites since there were no species of intermediate or rare abundance.
In grassland, Maeota dorsalis was the dominant species in the Chaco National Park and in the Intermediate I site, while in the Intermediate II site and the Pampa del Indio Provincial Park the dominant species was Pseudofluda capandegui. In relation to the dominant, intermediate, and rare species, greater equality was observed in the Pampa del Indio Provincial Park. In relation to adults, Maeota dorsalis was the dominant species in Chaco National Park, while in Intermediate I Neonella sp. nov. 1 was dominant, in the Intermediate II site and in the Pampa del Indio Provincial Park it was "Euophrys" melanoleuca. The percentage of dominant species was higher than that of intermediate in all cases. The percentage of rare species was markedly higher than that of dominant and intermediate species in the Chaco National Park.
In the foliage of the Chaco National Park, with all the estimators used, an average richness of 29 species was estimated, at the Intermediate I site 19, at the Intermediate II site 28, and at the Pampa del Indio Provincial Park 25. Chaco National Park is the place where more species remain to be registered. Regarding adults, an average richness of 21 species was estimated at the Chaco National Park, 23 at the Intermediate I site, 21 at the Intermediate II site, and 13 at the Pampa del Indio Provincial Park. The Intermediate I site was the site where they remained. more species to be recorded. The richness estimates also indicated that species remained to be recorded in the Chaco National Park, although the slopes of the curves indicated the opposite.
In the leaf litter of the Chaco National Park, an average richness of three species was estimated, in the Intermediate I site and in the Intermediate II site seven, and in the Pampa del Indio Provincial Park six. The Intermediate I site was the site where more species remained to be recorded. Regarding adults, an average richness of two species was estimated in the Chaco National Park, six in the Intermediate I site, eight in the Intermediate II site, and six in the Pampa del Indio Provincial Park. The Intermediate I site is the site where more species remained to be recorded.
In the grasslands of the Chaco National Park, 35 species in average richness were estimated, in the Intermediate I site 25, in the Intermediate II site 19, and in the Pampa del Indio Provincial Park 18. Chaco National Park was the site where more species remained to be recorded. Regarding adults, an average richness of 31 species was estimated in this park, 21 in the Intermediate I site, 14 in the Intermediate II site, and 22 in the Pampa del Indio Provincial Park. In this habitat, the Chaco National Park is the site where the most species remained to be recorded, followed by the Pampa del Indio Provincial Park.
The Jaccard and Bray-Curtis beta diversity analyses resulted in significant dissimilarity across sites. The Jaccard replacement and Bray-Curtis abundance balanced changes components had significantly higher values than the other components of these indices and were the main ones that explained the beta diversity among the four sites. Sites grouped by least dissimilarity on hierarchical cluster diagrams were generally those closest to each other. A significant correlation was found between the Jaccard and Bray-Curtis indices of dissimilarity and geographic distance, as well as between the most relevant components of these indices and geographic distance. All this was observed in general and for the foliage and grassland habitats, in particular. The results when considering only adults were also similar.
In leaf litter, the Jaccard and Bray-Curtis beta diversity analyses resulted in non-significant dissimilarity between sites. On the other hand, no significant correlation was found between these indices and geographic distance. The results when considering only adults were similar.
Regarding the analysis with the IndVal index, Philira micans was a detector species from semi-natural foliage; Semiopyla viperina, from the natural leaf litter, and Maeota dorsalis, from the natural grassland. The three aforementioned detector species were detected exclusively from the adult+juvenile data set. On the other hand, more unique species were found in protected sites than in unprotected sites. However, most of these species were represented by only one or two individuals.
In conclusion, the alpha and beta diversity analyses did not consistently show a higher diversity of spiders of the Salticidae family in natural/protected environments, compared to semi-natural/unprotected ones. Alpha diversity analyses also did not yield similar diversities in environments with the same protection status. The proportion of dominant, intermediate, and rare species in each habitat was also unrelated to conservation status. In this way, the first hypothesis, with its three predictions, was rejected.
It was shown that the Salticidae spiders in the study area are sensitive to the conservation status of the analyzed habitats since species that detect these conditions were recorded. On the other hand, more unique species were found in protected sites than in unprotected sites. Therefore, the second hypothesis was accepted. Finally, this work provides a description of 17 new species.
