The increasing density of world population requires technology that optimizes the use of
resources and production on the same surface, among these technologies are
agrochemicals. Rice is the main food in many cultures and it constitutes over a third of
the food base of the world population. In Argentina, the main rice-producing province is
Corrientes with a production of 91,500 hectares. Agrochemicals are molecules designed
to protect crops from different insects, weeds, and diseases that affect them, but it reduces
their efficiency per hectare. There are different types of agrochemicals, for example
insecticides which combat all the different types of insects, fungicides which combat
different types of fungi and herbicides that combat another type of weeds comparing with
crops. Agrochemicals must be used correctly so that they do not cause damage to the
environment and to human beings. Loss of mechanisms can be by transport because of
the wind and, water, can be transported to the water table by leaching and also in the food
itself if the withdrawal period is not respected. Rice is not the exception in the use of
agrochemicals since that all types of agrochemicals are used in it depending on the
adversity that occurs. Within the wide variety of agrochemicals used in rice cultivation,
three of them were worked in this thesis, two insecticides, one from the family of
phosphorous insecticides, chlorpyrifos, and another from the family of pyrethroids,
lambdacyalothrin, and a third from selective herbicide type cyhalofop n – butyl, selective
for rice weed (Echinochloa crus-galli), one of the main rice weeds. One of the objectives
of this work is the implementation of an analytical methodology that allows the
determination of these analytes in soil and water matrices for their study. Through the
implementation of solid phase extraction, it was possible to obtain a selectivity of the
analyte which was wanted to be determined, to eliminate the impurities in the extract to
be analyzed and also to reduce the values of the detection limits as well as that of
quantification, being the limits of quantification for cyhalofop n -butyl of 0.0020 mg L-1
,
chlorpyrifos 0.0016 mg L
-1
and lambdacyalothrin of 0.0010 mg L
-1
. At the same time,
different solvents were tested with the highest recovery percentage at the time of elution
from the solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridge, and it obtains the highest recovery
percentage with methanol for cyhalofop n-butyl, hexane for lambdacyalothrin. And
acetonitrile for chlorpyrifos. From the degradation kinetics studies in water, it was seen
that the hydrolysis rate of the three agrochemicals follows a simple first-order kinetics for the range of 0.5 to 2 mg L
-1
for cyhalofop n-butyl, and 1 mg L
-1
for chlorpyrifos and
lambdacyalothrin. The activation energy of the reaction is low for the three
agrochemicals, indicating that it is a simple and easy reaction to occur, and coincides with
the low half-life of these herbicides. It also indicates that the transition state would be
solvated, so that it lowers the activation barrier. According to the activation energy, the
order of reactivity at acidic pH is cyhalofop n-butyl > lambdacyalothrin > chlorpyrifos.
Since we are in solution, enthalpy gives us an idea of the activation barrier, and we come
to the same conclusion when we analyze Arrhenius, which is a reaction that occurs easily.
However, the most important thing is the great negative value of the entropy that indicates
the transition state is ordered and solvated, and it also provides the reaction. This allows
us to postulate that the solvent is relevant in the reaction. There are significant differences
in the persistence of pesticides between the different studied compounds. The following
order was the one with the shortest duration was cyhalofop n-butyl, lambdacyalothrin and
finally chlorpyrifos under the conditions in which the experiment was carried out in water.
Regarding the adsorption and desorption studies, four adsorption isotherm models such
as the Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich models were tested with
respect to the experimental data obtained. From the study of these models, it can be
deduced that the Temkin model is the one that best fits to describe the adsorption of the
four agrochemicals, being the same L-type isotherms, which shows a high affinity
between the adsorbent and it adsorbs until the substrate becomes saturated. The values of
adsorption energies for the three agrochemicals indicates that it is a simple and easy to
occur, and coincides with the low half-life of these herbicides. According to the
adsorption energy, the order of reactivity at acidic pH is cyhalofop n-butyl >
lambdacyalothrin > chlorpyrifos. There are significant differences in the persistence of
pesticides between the different compounds studied, the following order being the one
with the shortest duration was cyhalofop n-butyl, lambdacyalothrin and finally
chlorpyrifos under the conditions in which the experiment was carried out in water.
Regarding the adsorption and desorption studies, four adsorption isotherm models such as the Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin, Dubinin- Radushkevich models were tested with
respect to the experimental data obtained. From the study of these models, it can be
deduced that the Temkin model is the one that best fits to describe the adsorption of the
four agrochemicals, being the same L-type isotherms, which shows a high affinity
between the adsorbent and adsorbent until the substrate becomes saturated. The number
of adsorption energy of the three studied agrochemicals reveals an essentially chemical
adsorption. It is shown that the adsorption rate of these three studied agrochemicals
reveals that the contaminated soils can act as a secondary source of contamination.
Mitigation studies were carried out with rice husks and two concentrations were tested,
25 and 50% of rice husks mixed with soil. From these studies, it can be deduced that the
addition of rice husks increases the adsorption of pesticides and decreases the amount
desorbed, leaving the pesticide retained in the soil to be degraded by microorganisms. It
prevents its leaching, so it protects the water table from the adsorption models; it was
seen that the Langmuir isotherm is the model that best describes the adsorption of the
pesticides studied in the amended soil with 25% rice husks and that of Temkin for which
50% husks were used. In the graphical representation, it was seen that the isotherms are
L-type, which shows a high affinity between the adsorbent and the adsorbate in the initial
phase of the adsorption, until the substrate is saturated.
