Critical-reflexive approach to the construction of the border semiosphere in the film “7 boxes”
In this project carried out within the framework of the Semiotics chair of the Faculty of Humanities
of the UNNE and in connection with the Third Argentine Conference of Semiotics Students, the
construction of border semiospheres in relation to translation processes will be analyzed. To carry out
the proposed semiotic approach, the corpus to be used is composed of scenes from the Paraguayan
film “7 boxes”. The objectives are to identify the characteristics of the border semiosphere that are evident in
Market 4 represented in the film and to analyze both how the translations are carried out and the
translation crises in certain scenes.
For the theoretical framework, the notions of “semiosphere”, “border” (Lotman, 1996) and
“border semiosphere” (Camblong, 2014) will be taken into account. Other theoretical proposals by Ana
Camblong (2014) will also be used, namely the H Device and the notion of threshold (Bajtín, 1999). It
should be noted that Peirce’s (1988) concept of semiosis will be useful to complete the analysis.
Regarding the methodology, the proposal consists in observing, from a semiotic point of view,
under which circumstances the translation of information is carried out effectively and under which
others the translation is impeded, causing a crisis. Both situations will be linked to the presence or
absence of the necessary translator filter in the border semiosphere in question pursuant to the reading
hypothesis that we propose.
