Consideraciones actuales sobre la presencia de Papilomavirus Humano en la cavidad oral

Abstract

La infección por Papilomavirus Humano (HPV) es una de las infecciones virales más difundidas en la población y es considerada una enfermedad de transmisión sexual. La mayoría de estas infecciones son asintomáticas o subclínicas y pasan desapercibidas salvo se haga una prueba molecular para detección del genoma viral en células infectadas. Casi todas las infecciones son transitorias, controladas por la respuesta inmune, sólo

algunas se vuelven crónicas o persistentes y éstas son las que tienen mayor potencial oncogénico. Es impor- tante transmitir la necesidad de identificar precozmente las manifestaciones bucales de HPV y valorar la

importancia del tratamiento oportuno, lo cual es crucial para mejorar el pronóstico de cáncer bucal.

The infection by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is considered a sexually transmitted disease and it is one of the most widespread viral diseases among the general population. Most of these infections are asymptomatic or subclinical and they can remain unnoticed unless the virus could be detected in infected cells by molecular methods. Only some infections are chronic or persistent, and these possess the higher oncogenic potential. It is important to spread the need for early identification of oral manifestations of HPV and to highlight the importance of prompt treatment, which is crucial for improving the prognosis of oral cancer.
