The Fortín Makallé in the process of colonization of Chaco, Argentina
This work aims to give visibility, within the colonization process
deployed in the Chaco territory (Northern Argentina), to the Fortín
Makallé, which gave its name to the homonymous population
later established in its vicinity. The fort mentioned above is barely
mentioned in the regional historical and geohistorical literature.
Among the background information, no works delve into the role
that the fort played during the ten years it was active (1899-1909).
The bibliographical review, the location of archival documents and
written testimonies, the detection of journalistic publications, and
the location of photographs and artistic expressions have made it
possible to gather information with the purpose of shedding light on
this diffuse and little-known point in the geography and history of
the Argentine Chaco. This article shows that the Makallé fort fulfilled
logistical functions in an area located on the limits of a colonization
process, but it was also established as a point of connection with the
interior areas of the Chaco, assuming a referential role for the new
settlers who arrived at the place, facilitating the interaction between
them and the native communities located in the vicinity.
