Broiler chicken liveweight gain is affected by stress. The aim of the present study was to verify the effects of an anti-stress compound which contains choleretic-cholagogue and lipotropic substances, on liveweight and blood parameters from experimentally stressed broiler chickens. Birds were caged and put upside down for a short period of time, and this was repeated daily during all the productive cycle (43 days). A two-way factorial design (stress-medication), with two treatments each (yes-not) was applied, and 600 birds (150 in each of the 4 treatments, 50% each sex) were used. Final weight was lower (p < 0.05) in chickens submitted to stress without medication (2.299 kg), in comparison to controls (2.469 kg) and to treated animals, with stress (2.309 kg) and without it (2.358 kg). When treated groups were compared to not treated ones, results indicate that anti-stress medication caused significant increases of calcium, total protein, albumin and alpha 1, alpha 2, beta 2, gamma 1, and gamma 2 globulins, and non-significant elevations of hematocrit, hemoglobin, alkaline phosphatase, beta 1 globulin, and beta and pre-beta lipoprotein. The compound also caused glucose and pre-albumin decrease (significant), as well as inorganic phosphorous and alpha lipoprotein fall (not significant). Anti-stress medication demonstrated to has capacity to activate erythropoyetic, immunologic, and hepatic biosynthesis, but these effects did not correlate to improvement of liveweight gain. Technique used to cause stress did not produce the biochemical changes which are characteristics of the stress in mammals.
