This paper suggests an analysis of the relationships between the fictional discourse, specifically in the case of the tales interpreted as fantastic, and the conception of the real. It regards the fantastic one as a reading mode and therefore its definition depends on cultural reference frameworks that rule the reader’s possibilities of interpretation. This article tries to highlight that, although since the early twentieth century the category of the real leaves its unambiguous and stable nature, we still continue following those criteria that governed the modern world. The conclusions suggest that fantasy literature reveals this paradox and, from this fact, it also shows that it is possible to think that, in our consideration of the real, the sense - the interpretation - operates and not the category of truth - the convention -, as it is a subjective construct that accepts the possibility of the unstable and "supernatural".
