climáticos y tectónicos Cenozoic paleovegetation from northwestern Argentina. The paleobotanical information reported here is based on the
records of megafossils, palynomorphs and ichnofossils from the Cenozoic, particularly from the Paleocene to the
Pleistocene found in Salta, Tucumán and Catamarca provinces. Megafossils include foliar, fruit and stem impressions,
petrifi ed woods, phytophagy traces and microfossils. The palynomorphs, all of them of continental origin,
include spores and pollen grains of the Plantae kingdom, colonies and algae cysts (Chlorophyta) of the Protista
kingdom, and spores of the Fungi kingdom. The Paleogene age is represented in central-northern Salta province,
in the Tunal, Mealla, Maiz Gordo and Lumbrera formations. The Neogene crops out in all of the provinces cited:
in Anta (Early/Middle Miocene) and Palo Pintado formations (Late Miocene) from Salta province; in San José, Chiquimil
and Andalhuala formations (Middle Miocene to Pliocene) from Tucumán and Catamarca provinces; also,
in Playa del Zorro Alloformation (El Morterito Formation, Late Miocene) from Catamarca province. Pleistocene
outcrops in Tucumán and Salta provinces. The fossiliferous localities, the type of fossil found, the vegetal families
(established by the extant representative closest to the fossil specimen) and the type of paleocommunity are mentioned
for each formation. Relations and changes between the Cenozoic plant associations from Northwestern
Argentina are indicated for the fi rst time. The latt er would be related to the geological history of the area where
climatic and tectonic changes have occurred.
