The intermediate-sized agglomerations of Gran Resistencia and Gran Corrientes have shown strong spatial growth since the second half of the 20th century to the present. The accelerated expansion of both urban ejidos brought difficulties in the infrastructure and in the distribution of basic services, generating important shortcomings in the periphery. To the previous situation, the real state dynamics has added public and private investment projects, not always planned.
Also, the informal occupation of the land, generates real estate speculation by the new owners of theese spaces. At the same time, with the process of redevelopment on consolidated areas in the peripheries of the Gran Resistencia and Gran Corrientes, take place a dispersion of activities that provocates extensive suburban areas of very low demographic density, where the tendency towards urbanization generates strong dynamics between urban and rural, with different land uses and building densities.
For these reasons, the research work wants to characterize the growth patterns of the periphery of the Gran Resistencia and Gran Corrientes, since the beginning of the 21st century. For this purpose, statistical and cartographic sources, obtained from national agencies (INDEC census database), provincial (Cadastre Office of the provinces of Chaco and Corrientes) and municipal (Cadastre Office of municipalities) were analyzed. Also, we had worked with satellite images obtained from Google Earth and the field task was carried out making routes through the periphery of both agglomerates.
