La fotografía etnográfica como soporte o disparador de memoria. Una experiencia de la mirada

Abstract

El artículo analiza las respuestas que la fotografía etnográfica de Grete Stern (1958-1964) provoca actualmente a los mismos sujetos representados: la comunidad Toba de la ciudad de Resistencia, Chaco, Argentina. En este sentido se centra en la tercera de las tres instancias que comprende el proceso comunicativo de la imagen en tanto portadora de información: la recepción o reconocimiento. Dicha indagación se ve posibilitada por la intervención de la noción de memoria y la formulación de dos interrogantes clave que funcionan como ejes de análisis: de qué hay recuerdo cuando se observa una imagen fotográfica, y de quién es la memoria -en este caso visual-. Es decir ¿qué supone el acto de acordarse a través de una imagen fotográfica? De este modo la significación temporal deviene uno de los aspectos transversales en la lectura de la fotografía y constituye una de las bases del abordaje descriptivo-explicativo propuesto.

The article analyzes the answers that the ethnographic photography of Grete Stern (1958-1964) causes at the moment to such people represented: the community Toba of the city of Resistencia, Chaco, Argentina. In this sense, it is centered in reception or recognition, the third of the three instances comprehending the image’s communicative process as information carrier. This investigation is made possible by the intervention of the memory notion and the interrogative two formulation of key that work like analysis axes: of what there is memory when a photographic image is observed, and of whom it is the memory - in this visual case. That is to say, what supposes the act to remember through a photographic image? In this way the temporary meaning happens one of the cross-sectional aspects in the reading of the photography and constitutes one of the bases of the proposed descriptive- explanatory analysis.
