Doblegados por el peso de la gloria. El guerrero y sus problemas en el discurso del álbum de la guerra del Paraguay

Abstract

Entre 1893 y 1896, se publicó en Buenos Aires el Álbum de la Guerra del Paraguay, auspiciado por la Asociación de Guerreros del Paraguay, creada en 1891 por jefes y oficiales que formaron parte del bando argentino en el ejército aliado. Desde de sus primeras entregas, el Álbum buscaba resaltar las figuras militares a partir de una doble intención reivindicativa-histórica que trataba de contrarrestar una ingratitud social y estatal. Además, mostraba en el mismo movimiento un problema: el guerrero era una figura heroica pero humillada a la cual se debía socorrer. El objetivo de estas líneas es preguntarnos por la especificidad de este problema representado, ubicando el discurso del Álbum, por un lado, como antecesor de aquellos que se preocuparon por la cuestión social a fines del siglo XIX y, por otro lado, simultáneamente como parte de una larga tradición respecto a las obligaciones del gobierno hacia las fuerzas militares y de otra sobre el asociacionismo militar sobre la base de la participación bélica.

Between 1893 and 1896, the Álbum de la Guerra del Paraguay was published in Buenos Aires, backed by the Guerreros del Paraguay Association –created in 1891 by chiefs and officers who were part of the Argentine side in the allied army. From its first issues, the Álbum sought to highlight military figures based on a dual historical-defend intention that tried to counteract social and state ingratitude. Further, it showed in the same movement a problem: the guerrero was a heroic but humiliated figure in need of relief. The aim of these lines is to ask ourselves about the specificity of this represented problem, placing the Álbum discourse, on the one hand, as a forerunner of those who were concerned with the social question at the end of the 19th century, and on the other hand, simultaneously as part of a long tradition regarding the obligations of the government towards the military forces.
