Una aproximación ecomorfológica al estudio del aparato masticatorio del orden chiroptera : relación con la dieta y el ambiente

Resumen
Los quirópteros explotan una amplia gama de alimentos, en gran parte relacionados a adaptaciones
morfológicas únicas del aparato masticatorio y sus alas. Numerosos estudios se han centrado en
describir grupos tróficos y taxonómicos en relación a las variaciones de la morfología y la dieta, a
través de enfoques ecomorfológicos bajo el paradigma de forma-función. En esta tesis se realiza
una aproximación de esos aspectos, estudiando la anatomía craneomandibular y alar de distintas
especies de murciélagos, en diferentes niveles biológicos y escalas espaciales. Se utilizó
información procedente de la revisión de colecciones científicas (aplicando diferentes técnicas de
morfometría clásica y geométrica), estudios de campo y consulta bibliográfica. En primer lugar,
se analizaron aspectos de covariación intraespecífica del aparato masticatorio en función a los
perfiles dietarios de un filostómido frugívoro en seis ecorregiones que abarcan gran parte de su
rango distribucional. Se estudiaron 433 especímenes de Sturnira lilium y se construyó una matriz
con datos de 67 especies de plantas presentes en su dieta. En segundo lugar, se exploraron las
relaciones entre parámetros aerodinámicos y estrategias de alimentación en un ensamble de
molósidos insectívoros. Se utilizaron datos de morfología alar obtenidos de 206 individuos de seis
especies que se alimentan de insectos con diferentes exoesqueletos en ambientes con diferentes
tipos de vegetación. Finalmente, se realizó una integración ecomorfológica de comunidades para
distintos grupos tróficos presentes en diferentes ambientes. Se utilizaron datos craneomandibulares
de 707 especímenes de 31 especies de 10 grupos funcionales para comparar siete ensambles de
cinco ecorregiones del Nordeste de Argentina. Diversos análisis multivariados y tratamientos
específicos se aplicaron a los datos morfológicos y ecológicos recopilados. Los resultados
obtenidos indican altos grados de correspondencia entre los rasgos anatómicos estudiados y las
especializaciones dietarias. A partir de estos resultados se realizó una caracterización en función a
las propiedades mecánicas de los ítems consumidos y uso diferencial de los recursos alimentarios
en distintos ambientes de ocurrencia de las especies. Los hallazgos obtenidos a partir de los
objetivos planteados y la integración de la información generada brindan diferentes aportes al
entendimiento ecomorfológico de los murciélagos.
Bats exploit a wide range of foods largely related to unique morphological adaptations of their masticatory apparatus and wings. Many studies have focused on describing trophic and taxonomic groups in relation to variations in morphology and diet, through ecomorphological approaches under a form-function paradigm. In this thesis, a characterization of these aspects was made studying craniomandibular and wing bats anatomy at different biological levels and spatial scales. We used information collected from the review of scientific collections (applying different techniques of classical and geometric morphometry), field studies, and bibliographical research. First, we analyzed some aspects of intraspecific covariation of the masticatory apparatus based on the dietary profiles of one frugivorous phyllostomid in six ecoregions that cover a major part of its distributional range. A total of 433 specimens of Sturnira lilium were studied, and a matrix was built with data from 67 plant species present in their diet. Second, we explored the relationships between aerodynamic parameters and feeding strategies in an assemblage of molossids insectivores. Data of wing morphology was obtained from 206 individuals of six species that feed on insects with different exoskeletons in environments with different types of vegetation. Finally, an ecomorphological integration of communities was carried out for different trophic guilds present in different environments. Craniomandibular data from 707 specimens of 31 species from 10 functional groups were used to compare seven assemblages from five ecoregions of Northeastern Argentina. Diverse multivariate analyses and specific treatments were applied to morphological and ecological data. The results obtained indicate high correspondence between the anatomical features studied and dietary specializations. A characterization was made based on the mechanical properties of species consumed items and the differential use of food resources in different environments. The findings and the integrated information generated in the present study provide new contributions to a better ecomorphological understanding of bats.
