The forests were categorized according
to conservation status through the measurement of the following variables: human
footprint index, canopy cover, land use, among others. La diversidad se analizó desde tres
enfoques tradicional (índices neutrales), taxonómico y funcional (índices no neutros).
Hymenoptera (Insecta) represents the third most diverse order of Insecta and one of
the most beneficial groups for humans, including species that are pollinators, parasitoids,
and predators of other species considered as plagues. On the other hand, many
hymenopterans represent harmful invasive and pest species. Among Hymenoptera, the
Family Formicidae has special relevance due to is one of the most abundant group of
insects in terrestrial ecosystems; with a wide biogeographical distribution these, they are
represented into almost all environments, from deserts to riparian forests. Ants occupy a
wide variety of niches and play key roles in terrestrial ecosystems. This family includes
species considered as landscape modifiers and some of economic importance as potential
pests in forestries.
The aim of the present thesis was to study the effect of anthropogenic activities on
diversity and spatial structure of Formicidae assemblages in riparian forests of the Humid
Chaco district. Diversity was assessed form three different aspects: traditional (neutral
indices), taxonomic and functional (non-neutral indices).
The present study also includes an updated inventory of the Formicidae in the Humid
Chaco, comprising 508 species or morphospecies, nine of which are recorded for the first
time in this ecoregion. Biogeographical patterns were also defined that determine areas
of particular interest for conservation. The analysis of diversity from three different points
of view has shown the presence of a gradient that shows a decrease in the value of these
indices as the state of degradation of the forest increases in the forests of the Humid
Chaco.
This thesis provides a first understanding of biological, ecological and
biogeographical aspects of the Formicidae assemblages in the Humid Chaco and allows
us to get a clear description of their diversity.
