The purpose of this work was to determine the analgesic effects of xilazine–ketamine association, when it is administrated as epidural injection in buffaloes. Ten bulls of the Mediterranean breed of different age and liveweight received xilazine at 0.05 mg/kg, and ketamine at 2 mg/kg, both drugs in the same syringe. According to the anatomical region, post–administration analgesic effects began between 11 and 16 minutes, and persisted until 40 to 64 minutes later. Different surgeries were performed on the animals during the analgesic effects. No significant differences were registered (p < 0.05) between cardiac and respiratory frequencies before and during anesthesia, neither the presence of undesirable subsequent side effects after it. The association of xilazine–ketamine is an effective anesthetic alternative for buffaloes.
