Unspecific serologic reactions may occur when Coggins test is used to diagnose equine infectious anemia in horses. The purpose of this study was to determine the percentage of these unspecific reactions in eighty–two negative horses divided in 7 groups. Four groups received a single dose of different vaccines against viral infections. Two groups received 1 and 2 doses (respectively) of a commercial mineral supplement with the addition of different organic compounds. Animals of the final group were injected with the mineral supplement alone. Serologic control was performed by means of Coggins test. Results indicated that animals injected with a single dose of the mineral supplement plus organic compounds showed 16.7% of unspecific reactions, while those that received two doses showed 25% (false positives in both cases).
