El pasto gatton (panicum maximum cv. gatton panic) una alternativa para el noroeste del Chaco, Argentina

Abstract

El pasto Gatton (Panicum maximum cv. gatton panic) es un cultivar que se seleccionó por ser perenne, de crecimiento erecto, desarrollando grandes macollas. Resultados de varias pruebas de adaptación han mostrado buen crecimiento del cv. Gatton panic desde el nivel del mar hasta los 1800 m, en trópico húmedo con altas precipitaciones, y en condiciones subhúmedas con cinco a seis meses secos y precipitaciones anuales mayores a 500 mm. El objetivo de este escrito fue dar a conocer el potencial que tiene el pasto Gatton en el noreste del Chaco, Argentina como fuente de forraje, registrando entre sus mejores ventajas, que la producción de forraje oscila entre 7.5 a 10.5 t de MS ha 1 año 1, donde un 20% de este rendimiento puede producirse durante el período seco. La calidad forrajera del cv. Gatton Panic es alta comparada con otras gramíneas tropicales. Se han reportado valores de PC entre 6 y 11% y digestibilidad in vitro de la materia seca entre 55 y 70%.Gatton grass (Panicum maximum cv. gattonpanic) is a cultivar that was selected for being perennial, of erect growth, which develops large clusters. Results from several adaptation tests have shown good growth of cv. Gatton panic from sea level and up to 1800 m, in humid tropics with high precipitations, and in sub-humid conditions with five to six dry months and annual precipitations higher tan 500 mm. The objective of this study was to communicate the potential that Gatton grass has in the northeast of the Chaco region, Argentina, as a source of fodder. Among its best advantages, it shows that fodder production ranges from 7.5 to 10.5 t of DM ha 1 year 1, where 20 % of this yield can be produced during the dry period. The fodder quality of cv. Gatton panic is high compared to other tropical grasses. Values of RP between 6 and 11 % have been reported and in vitro digestibility of the dry matter between 55 and 70 %.
