To determine reference values and physiological variations on the erythrogram of northeastern Argentine autochthonous caimans, captive sub-adults clinically healthy Caiman latirostris (n=109) and Caiman yacare (n=114) reared under a ranching system, were investigated. Values of hematocrit (21.2±3.5%), erythrocytes (0.49±0.09 T/l), MCV (428±36 fl), hemoglobin (6.12±1.08 g/dl), MCH (125±19 pg) and MCHC (30.1±3.7%) were determined by specific reptilian techniques. Dimensions (longitude, wide) from mature and immature erythrocytes did not register significant differences between species. Erythrocyte concentration was higher in C. yacare (p < 0.05). MCV and MCH indexes were higher in C. latirostris. Erythrocytes were more numerous in males; MCV and MCH were higher in females, considering grouped species. Erythrocytes, hemoglobin, MCH and MCHC decreased when age progressed (increases of liveweight and size), in coincidence to MCV increase. Except MCV, all remaining hematological values were lower in winter. Caimans fed on balanced diet in a hatchery registered higher hematological values than those fed at a zoo.
