The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the early pregnancy of buffaloes (first third of gestation) on some hematological and biochemical variables, live weight, thoracic perimeter and body condition, in a buffalo farm in Corrientes, Argentina. Forty buffaloes of the Mediterranean breed were used. Among them, twenty 2.5-year-old females (10 pregnant and 10 non-pregnant first service) and 20 females older than 4 years (10 pregnant and 10 non-pregnant). Body weight, body condition and girth circumference were recorded, and blood samples were taken to assess hematological and biochemical parameters. A factorial arrangement experimental design was used. The adult buffaloes revealed higher values of body weight and girth circumference than the younger animals. The values of hematocrit, erythrocytes, leukocytes, hemoglobin, MCV and HCM were higher in adult buffalo; likewise, hematocrit, red blood cells and hemoglobin were higher in pregnant animals. Proteins, globulins, cholesterol, cholesterol linked to high and low density proteins, urea and the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase were higher in the adults, while the pregnant buffaloes revealed higher levels of serum urea and the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase.
