A new species, Helicteres Vegae (Sterculia cea e), from Sinaloa, México is described and illustrated. The chromosome number 2n=18 was found. H. Vegae is compared to the -rest of the Mexican species and a key is provided. Its affinity to the Asian <j.nd the other American species is discussed. H. Vegae together with H. Rekoí and H. carthagenensis are considered to be the most highly differentiated of the American species. A possible American area of origen for Helicteres is proposed; included in this area are found the remaining two New World genera of the tribe Helictereae.
